Well, hello, Dolly, Its so nice to have you back where you belong......................
I don't think I have made these in over 20 years. I forgot how good they are. What I really love about them is how the condensed milk drizzles down between the coconut and the chocolate. Very simple to make.
TIP: Many recipes call for baking in a 9 by 13 inch pan. Works better in a smaller pan, an 8 or 9 inch square. If you make them in a larger pan the squares will be very thin. Not nearly as satisfying to eat.
Hello Dolly Squares
============
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup of sugar
1 1/2 to 2 cup of chocolate chips
1 cup of chopped walnuts
1 cup of coconut
1 can of condensed milk
Heat oven to 325°F (edited from 350)
Melt Butter and add graham cracker crumbs and sugar. Mix together and then pat into a 8 or 9 inch square baking dish.
Sprinkle chocolate chips over the crust, then the walnuts and then the coconut. Drizzle the condensed milk evenly over the top. Bake for about 25 minutes until the coconut is lightly brown. Cool and then cut into squares.
I have almost everything to make these! I just need the milk.
ReplyDeleteHow do you think they would be with sliced almonds?
I'm sure that they would be fine with almonds.

My family`s version does not have nuts and uses butterscotch chips as well. Some versions include cherries, but that strikes me as unbearably sweet. A coffee shop in Canmore AB (The Summit- best muffins ever) has a version called magic bars that has pecans, coconut and butterscotch and choc chips. I think it`s pretty flexible. And totally evil and addictive!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos! Excellent work :)
ReplyDeleteBoy do these look rich! I have some choco fans who would just love these.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful. I have also forgotten these. I can see where baking them in a smaller pan is just so much better!!
ReplyDeleteA favorite here for eons too..My daughters grew up on them for Xmas:) We didn't call them Hello Dolly.. but you sure have me humming that tune!:)
ReplyDeleteWe call them Magic Cookie Bars, and always have them at Christmas time to add to our cookie plates. They are always welcome...thanks for your version...Yum!

Aww, you're bringing up wonderful memories Ann!
ReplyDeleteMom used to make these as a special treat (she called them both Hello Dolly Bars, and Magic Cookie Bars as Diane mentioned.)
Either way they are deeply delicious. (Great photo!!) xo
My husband is from Missouri. His father used to make these. I still have the typed recipe, from an old-fashioned typewriter. My husband would swoon if I show him your gorgeous photos. I make these for his birthday. I should make him some this weekend. They are so easy to make, and sinfully good.
ReplyDeleteThose squares look so good!
ReplyDeleteLove them Ann...I have blogged about them as well...great easy little treat...yours look wonderful!

Oh, Yes, I remember these well! The only thing bad about these bars is addiction! :-)
ReplyDeleteDecandant! I'm not sure I've ever had one, but I have always heard of them.
ReplyDeleteThat's it! No matter if my pants are too tight - I'm off to the store to buy the ingredients.
ReplyDeleteI shall start training after we eat them all.
oh my gosh. I'm sure I must make them! :D
ReplyDeleteLoved these! We called them 7 Layer Bars growing up!!!
ReplyDeleteI made these according to the recipe and they didn't seem to 'set' properly. They are really runny/gooey when I try to cut them into squares....what did I do wrong?
ReplyDeleteLucy, not sure you did anything wrong unless you cut them while they were still warm. If you use the small pan, like I do, even after they set you will see the condensed milk as it flowed down through the layers. But they normally are not runny/gooey. Try refrigerating them if they are too gooey.
