Best Oatmeal Cookies
I'm at the store today so I have no idea what dinner will be. So I thought I would share the cookies I baked this morning on Foodie Friday. Thanks again to Designs by Gollum for hosting Foodie Fridays.
I promised Moe last night I would make a batch of his favourite cookies today. So since I was up at 5 am, what better time to bake. We had cookies and coffee for breakfast.
I cut the recipe out of the Toronto Star Newspaper back in the '80's so I've been making them for many years. I stopped looking for the perfect Oatmeal cookie once I found this one. The cookie is thin and buttery. I'm a purist and like them plain but you can add raisins, cranberries, nuts, etc.
This cookie lives up to it's name "Best" Oatmeal Cookie.

I can't imagine making cookies at 5a.m.! They look delicious, Ann.
ReplyDeleteOatmeal cookies are my all time favorite. I've enjoyed them for years. I can be handed several options and I will continually reach for the oatmeal. So this one is a recipe I'll use time and time again.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Sweet wishes your DB sis,
Sara
I love early morning baking..Just worry about making too much noise for J..The day starts and it's already HOME w/ something freshly baked..
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Oatmeal..not for breakfast..only if it's in the form of cookies!
They look great.I think I have made them..Been following you so long:)
I've been looking for the "perfect" oatmeal cookie for ages. I will certainly give this one a go. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou are an early bird! What a great way to wake up to the smell of freshly-baked cookies ;) They sound wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this recipe! I love it! I made these last night & they're better than my moms! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your comments.
ReplyDeleteKathleen, Susan, I've always been an early riser. Usually up between 5:30 and 6:30 every morning including my days off. I'd love to be able to sleep in, but can't
Sara, I hope you give this recipe a try.
Monique, Moe is up at the same time if not earlier so I don't have to worry about waking him up. Like you I only like oatmeal cookies. Not cooked oatmeal.
Katy, I'm glad you are going to give the recipe a try. I hope you will let me know what you think.
Raposo, Glad you liked the cookies. Please don't tell your mom though.
Ann
I am bookmarking this to make for my husband. They look wonderful. You have a great blog. I really love your recipes :D
ReplyDeleteThese look very tasty! But are the chewy cookies or crisp cookies?
ReplyDeleteHeavenly Housewife, Thanks. I hope your husband loves them as much as mine does.
ReplyDeleteAfua, If you like a crispy cookie, just bake them a minute or two longer. I would say they are more a chewy cookie. Very thin though, not "cakey". Does that make sense?
Just made these. YUM, they're fantastic. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou are right, no need for any other oatmeal cookie recipes. I have been looking for this cookie for a long time. My grandma used to make a cookie like this. Yum! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteDeborah,You are welcome. I'm glad you tried the recipe and liked it.
ReplyDeleteMindi, "I have been looking for this cookie for a long time. My grandma used to make a cookie like this."
Thank you, your comment touched my heart.
Yes, your "chewy" description makes perfect sense. I've been looking for such a recipe, so thanks!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to bake these right now! :)
ReplyDeleteI just finished making these and they are amazing!! I'm so glad I found this. Thank you sooo much!
ReplyDeleteThanks Anonymous. Glad you like my favourite oatmeal cookie.
ReplyDeleteAnn
these are awesome. I only had unsalted butter so I used 1 tsp of sea salt and added chopped walnuts... DELISH!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked them. I've added toasted walnuts or pecans and I like them with dried cranberries too. If you like raisins you could also add them to the mix.
ReplyDeleteAnn
these cookies are everything an oatmeal cookie should be...
ReplyDeletei didn't flatten them with a cup dipped in sugar because i felt there was enough sugar in the recipe itself, and i don't like my cookies over sweet. instead i used my hands to flatten them. basically, they are so good the first batch has already disappeared before the second batch could finish baking! the kids obviously approve!
Just made these and WHOA...they are good. Sending them to some friends cause they are dangerous to have in the house. No need to look any farther for the "best" oatmail cookie, I just found it.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the cookies. They came with the name Best Oatmeal Cookie and I have to agree. I stopped looking when I found this recipe.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to tell you that these cookies are AMAZING!!!!! I am always trying new recipes and this is by far the best oatmeal cookie ever! Thank you so much for sharing it !!
ReplyDeleteThank you for blogging on how to make these cookies! I make them often and it is hard to not just sit eat the cookie dough :). All the best to you and yours. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteWould these turn out okay if I made them with the Quick Oats? thanks.
ReplyDeleteWould these turn out okay if I used the Quick Oats? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteJenn, I always have old fashion oats on hand so that is what I use. I don't see why you couldn't use quick oats.

Do you pulse the rolled oats in a food processor before adding them to the dough, or do you add them in whole?
ReplyDeleteKpetty, no, I do not process the rolled oats. They are used as whole.

Hi Ann!!! Made these today - Family Day baking in Ontario - and they were such a hit. Brought them to a family luncheon and the little ones (actually, not-so-little, they're in high school.......) hoarded them to put them into baggies and bring them home. Didn't have brown sugar on hand or baking soda so I mixed maple syrup with some white sugar and used the same amount instead of brown. Will definitely make again. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThese are really good, thin and chewy just like I like them. I followed the recipe exactly except I used 3/4 C white sugar and 3/4 C brown sugar.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback Mauilover. They are my favourite.
